Ce que ça mesure

The Amsler grid checks your central vision — the sharp, detailed vision you use for reading and recognising faces, which comes from the macula at the centre of the retina. It looks for distortion (wavy or bent lines), blur, dark patches or missing areas that can signal a macular problem such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Comment ça marche

You test one eye at a time. Covering the other eye and wearing your usual reading glasses, you hold the screen at a comfortable reading distance (about 30 cm) and stare steadily at the central dot. Because your gaze stays fixed, any abnormal area of the macula shows up as part of the surrounding grid looking distorted, faded or absent. You tap the squares where the lines look wrong; we record the marked cells for each eye and flag whether you should seek a prompt professional check.

Conseils pour un résultat fiable

  • 1Keep staring at the dotThe test only works if your eye stays fixed on the centre. Use your peripheral attention to judge the rest of the grid.
  • 2Test in the same conditions each timeSame glasses, distance and lighting make small changes easier to spot if you screen regularly.
  • 3Screen both eyes routinely if you're at riskIf you're over 60, smoke or have a family history of AMD, a quick weekly check can catch change early when treatment works best.
  • 4Act on any new distortionSudden wavy, bent or missing lines — especially in one eye — should be checked urgently, not watched at home.
