Ce que ça mesure

Your average level of daytime sleepiness — how likely you are to doze off in eight everyday situations. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale turns those ratings into a single 0–24 score that estimates your general sleep propensity, a key clue to whether you are getting enough good-quality sleep.

Comment ça marche

You rate the chance you would doze off in each of eight common situations, from sitting and reading to stopping in traffic, on a 0 (never) to 3 (high chance) scale. The eight ratings are summed into a total: 0–7 is normal, 8–9 mild, 10–15 moderate, and 16–24 severe daytime sleepiness.

Conseils pour un résultat fiable

  • 1Distinguish sleepy from tiredEpworth measures the urge to fall asleep, not general fatigue. ‘Sleepy’ means you might actually doze, not just feel low on energy.
  • 2Watch for snoring cluesHigh sleepiness plus loud snoring or witnessed breathing pauses raises the suspicion of obstructive sleep apnoea — mention both to your doctor.
  • 3Mind the roadIf you ever feel sleepy while driving, treat it as urgent. Pull over, and don’t drive when drowsy.
  • 4Track change over timeRe-take after improving your sleep, or after starting treatment, to see whether your daytime sleepiness is improving.
