What it measures

How much anxiety you have experienced over the past two weeks, using the GAD-7 — a seven-item scale that captures core symptoms of generalised anxiety such as restlessness, uncontrollable worry, and a sense of dread. Your total score (0–21) places you in a band from minimal to severe anxiety.

How it works

You rate how often each of seven symptoms has bothered you in the last two weeks, from ‘not at all’ (0) to ‘nearly every day’ (3). The answers are summed into a single score, which maps onto validated severity bands. Higher scores reflect more frequent and intense anxiety symptoms.

Tips for an accurate result

  • 1Honesty helps you mostThe score is only as useful as your answers. Being truthful, even about hard symptoms, gives you a clearer picture.
  • 2Track change over timeRetaking the GAD-7 every couple of weeks shows whether things are improving, steady, or worsening — often more telling than one result.
  • 3Care for the basicsRegular sleep, movement, and time outdoors all ease anxiety. Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol can help more than people expect.
  • 4Reach out when worry takes overIf anxiety is interfering with work, relationships, or daily life, your GP can talk through therapy and other support that genuinely helps.
